THE UNFORGOTTEN

UNNATURAL

CAUSES

A nine-part true crime podcast that tells the story of how one of Texas’ most prolific serial killers targeted older Americans through the cracks of a broken system.

UNNATURAL CAUSES is the second season of THE UNFORGOTTEN, a true-crime podcast from Free Range Productions. Hosted by award-winning journalist Charlie Scudder, it takes you behind the scenes of an astounding criminal investigation and reveals failure after failure of a system meant to protect some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Josh Aleman knew something was wrong when he noticed how many residents were suddenly dying at the senior living community where he worked. Ellen House had a bad feeling when she saw her mother’s finger — bruised, like someone had torn the wedding ring off her hand. Shannon Dion noticed almost right away, when the funeral workers didn’t find her mother’s precious guardian angel charm around her neck. Cheryl Pangburn didn’t realize until later, when a high school friend said on Facebook that her mother was murdered.

They all had their suspicions, but none knew just what kind of evil was visiting the senior living communities their loved ones called home. Today, at least two dozen families in North Texas are coping with the shock of learning that their loved ones’ seemingly peaceful deaths were anything but. Police and prosecutors have told them all they believe Billy Chemirmir — a 50-year-old Kenyan immigrant who was serving a life sentence when he was found dead in his Texas prison cell last fall — smothered their parents and stole precious heirlooms and other jewelry.

For years, the murders were brushed aside as heart attacks and theft reports went ignored as one of the most prolific serial killers in the state’s history stalked vulnerable victims at luxury senior living communities. THE UNFORGOTTEN: UNNATURAL CAUSES does what the police and senior living facilities where they lived and died failed or refused to do: String together evidence that points to years of failed care into a riveting story. It helps listeners understand the harm that can come to their aging loved ones when the system meant to safeguard them fails catastrophically — and the emotional toll that these families have faced when pleading, in vain, for officials to more closely scrutinize these peculiar and untimely deaths.
